Trainings Available:
Nature and Needs of Gifted Students (2-3 hours, 1 session)
In this course, we discuss who gifted students are and how we can serve them. We cover the characteristics, needs, myths and social/emotional aspects that often accompany giftedness. This includes asynchrony and the five overexcitabilities, and how these may impact the classroom both positively and negatively. The new WACs and TPEP guidelines are also covered as they relate to serving this population of students. Lastly, we talk about curriculum models and best practices. As per an agreement between OSPI, WAETAG, and Washington ESDs this course is a prerequisite for further PD.
Differentiation (6-9 hours, 2-3 sessions)
The objectives for this 3 session course are many. First, we discuss the foundations of differentiation that includes creating a community atmosphere where all students accept that there will be differences among learners and we all get what we need. We also cover the necessity for pretesting and getting to know our learners. The specific strategies demonstrated include the use and management of flexible groupings, compacting curriculum, anchor activities, tiered lessons, menus, choice boards, and independent learning contracts. Participants will take these strategies and ideas back to their classroom between sessions and share out with the group any successes or challenges they experience. If time and group size allows, we also cover differentiation and depth of knowledge (DOK) in several categories of instructional strategies that affect student achievement. These include questioning strategies, identifying similarities and differences, summarizing and note taking, reinforcing effort and providing recognition.
Also available, tailored to specific requests or needs:
Creative Thinking (2-3 hours, 1 session)
Critical Thinking (2-3 hours, 1 session)
